Introduction

Browsing the Sonogram and Studying the Spectrum

Browsing the Sonogram

Synchronous Play and Sonogram View

The cursor associates the sound that is being played and the temporal evolution of the waveform, sonogram and instantaneous spectrum. The red rectangle locates the current segment of the sonogram on the general view.

Zooming in a Frequency or Time Zone

To zoom in a time or frequency zone, SHIFT click and drag the mouse on the corresponding axis.

Inspecting the Spectral Components

Inspector Window and Short Term Spectrum Representation

The sonogram allows to get information about the spectral components. This information relates to :

  • temporal position

  • amplitude

  • frequency and its corresponding note and midi pitch.

You can either :

  • hover the arrow over the sonogram : information is displayed in the Transport Window, at the top of the sonogram window.

  • or use the pitchfork tool, to listen to these components with a click. In this case, this information is displayed in the Inspector Window.

The pitchfork is located on a component whose frequency, 2353 Hz, is equivalent to a D5, with a -33 dB amplitude, which is quite important. A precise midicents value is given in the Inspector window.

Transport Window

When the mouse is hovered over the sonogram, the same information is is displayed at the bottom of the transport window.

Pitchfork and Instantaneous Spectrum

When browsing the sonogram with the pitchfork, we get three representations of the instantaneous spectrum in the right adjacent zone :

  • the blue spectrum represents the amplitudes at the cursor's position

  • the light green spectrum represents the amplitudes at the pitchfork's position – dotted lines locate the pitchfork precisely on the time and frequency axis–

  • the dark green spectrum shows coincidences between both spectra.
